City Highways are responsible for maintaining and repairing over 500 miles of road and 800 miles of footpaths within the City. We undertake construction and maintenance of highway, traffic, and transport infrastructure projects, including major public realm schemes to improve the pedestrian and transport network within the City Centre. We also provide winter service and gully cleaning services in the city.
This is an exciting opportunity for a Skilled Logistics Operative to join the City Highways’ Logistics and Operations Team to deliver high profile construction schemes within Leicester. You’ll provide logistical support functions for the efficient delivery of highway and drainage construction and maintenance activities.
Based at our offices at 90 Leycroft Road, you will be required to work from other locations across the city. You may be required to work outside of normal office hours, including weekends, due to construction activities. Standard working hours are 7am to 3pm however you may be required to do overtime hours depending on workload.
Your role
As a Skilled Logistics Operative, you’ll undertake large scale earthworks activities in the proximity of underground utilities in the city centre area. You’ll be responsible for driving and operating construction plant such us excavators, mini-diggers, LGV and mobile cranes HIABs and work to precise levels using profiles and traveller, following safe digging procedures. You’ll undertake Banksman duties, supervising excavators, plant, and vehicles as well as undertaking safety and quality checks of operated plant and machinery. You’ll deliver material to and from City Highways construction sites within Leicester and collect and dispose of site wastes using LGV mobile crane. Using your expertise, you’ll supervise, train mentor lesser skilled staff, apprentices, and trainees by sharing knowledge and information.
What you’ll need
With substantial experience in construction and logistics, you’ll have knowledge of construction Health, Safety and Environmental requirements and safe working procedures. You’ll be certified to operate excavators CPCS or CITB up to 10tonne with Quick Hitch facility, , in a site environment, with assistance from a banksman. You will have an opportunity to be trained to operate JCB 3CX type with backhoe loader. You are expected to be a qualified LGV driver and willing to be trained in mobile crane operations a.k.a HIAB. Willing to work on own or as part of a team, you’ll be able to carry out duties efficiently with minimum supervision and direction. Using good communication skills, you’ll liaise effectively with colleagues, suppliers and customers.
