Full Time / 37 Hours Per Week / Fixed Term for 12 Months
The perfect opportunity for the next step in your career as a Landscape Planner.
Leicester is an exciting and enjoyable place to live and work. It has a rich history and a wonderful built and natural environment. It is a rapidly growing economy in a strategic position in the country. As a result, it has a growing national and international profile. The Planning Service aims to proactively plan to help shape the City over the short, medium, and longer terms, balancing the need for new homes and jobs against the need to protect the heritage and green environment. We are now embarking on a new phase of regeneration and placemaking as we progress with our new Local Plan.
As an authority, we are on a drive to provide quality first-hand work experience and develop career pathways in Landscape Architecture. Working under the guidance of landscape architects, urban designers, and planners, you’ll undertake landscape planning work specialising in landscape design and delivery in accordance with statutory functions, legislation, and guidelines. An exciting yet challenging role, you’ll be enthusiastic about working with a range of disciplines to achieve the best landscape outcomes.
Based at City Hall, you’ll be required to work across the city, attending meetings on site and with key stakeholders, customers, and clients. This is a Full time, Fixed term Graduate post for 12 months initially, working 37 hours per week from Monday to Friday. There will an opportunity to extend the 12-month fixed contract by a further 11 months subject to further assessment and progression of pay.
What you’ll be doing
You’ll assist with both minor and major developments and other planning work in the Conservation Team, a specialist team within the Planning Service, that provides advice and guidance to all parts of the council in addition to delivering schemes on the ground. You’ll be required to undertake site inspections, surveys, research, negotiations, and engage in public participation. You’ll draft reports which assess the planning considerations relevant to individual proposals as well as deal effectively with queries from members of the public regarding landscape planning, the application process and your own case work.
What you’ll need
You’ll have graduated within the last 2 years, or due to graduate this summer with a degree or Diploma in Landscape Architecture or Urban Design that is accredited by the Landscape Institute or RTPI. You’ll have a good understanding of landscape objectives, principles, and practice. Using excellent written and verbal communication skills, you’ll be able to advise on applications, develop proposals, carry out surveys and research, negotiate with applicants, write reports, and make recommendations. With the ability to work effectively on your own initiative and as part of a team, you’ll be able to deal with challenging individuals and groups in a calm, diplomatic, professional manner.
What we can offer you
As well as the satisfaction of helping to improve thousands of lives across Leicester, you can look forward to a work environment that encourages a healthy work/life balance. You’ll enjoy generous annual leave, membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme and the option of flexible working.
