Leicester City has the worst one year cancer survival in the country. it’s cancer screening rates are generally significantly lower than the national average with rates even lower in specific communities within our population. The City’s childhood vaccination rates have traditionally been higher than the national average but over the last few years these have declined and, alongside our adult and older people vaccination rates are now causing concern. The Screening and Immunisation Programme Officer will play a key role in ensuring that people living in the city are supported and encouraged to access screening and immunisations and that uptake in both is reflected in this work. This is an opportunity to make a real difference to the way services are delivered in Leicester. You must be passionate about Public Health and addressing health inequalities in Leicester City specifically those that effect children/young people and their families.
The team currently work predominantly remotely, going into to the city centre office approximately once a week. The standard working pattern is 8.30am-5pm Mon to Thurs, 8.30am -4.30pm Fridays, but the role holder may be needed to attend meeting or events outside those hours occasionally. You may be required to travel across the city on occasion whether this be by way of your own vehicle or public transport. We will also consider this position on a secondment basis for Leicester City Council employees only. What you’ll be doing
Joining the Health Protection team, you’ll play an integral role in improving screening and immunisation, reducing health inequalities, and improving the general health of everyone in Leicester. You’ll work closely with our community engagement team to understand the barriers to update and what we can do to reduce these. You will work closely with our colleagues in the ICB and NHS Trusts to work together to achieve our objectives. There will be additional opportunity to get involved in the team’s work around other health protection issues such as outbreaks. You will be part of a supportive environment with plenty of opportunity grow and develop your interest in public health.
What you’ll need
With experience of leading health promotion projects in a diverse area, you’ll be able to plan, carry out and evaluate evidence-based public health projects and programmes. Using strong written and verbal communication skills, you’ll be confident in approaching, working with, and presenting to a wide variety of stakeholders. You’ll be able to facilitate projects between multiple partners and agree on priorities for multi-agency projects. Decisive, you’ll be able to persuade and motivate other people. Highly organised, you’ll be able to manage your own workload and time. A team player and a problem-solver, you’ll work well within a team as well as a range of individuals and groups at a variety of levels.
