Our dynamic, multi-disciplined team enforce and promote trading standards in a wide range of work areas, in particular fair trading, doorstep crime, metrology, scams, and product safety, across the city. We protect the health and well-being of our citizens and encourage businesses to prosper. A valued member of our team, you’ll plan and lead on service projects, inspections, investigations, and enforcement.
We have full-time, permanent and fixed term positions, working 37 hours per week from Monday to Friday. This is a career graded post. The salary grade at which appointments will be made will depend on qualifications and/or demonstrable competency and experience. Progress will be by satisfactory demonstration of competency agreed at annual Appraisals and through on-going supervision.
We would particularly welcome candidates with experience of weights and measures.
What you’ll be doing
You’ll provide compliance advice to business, undertake, report upon, and evaluate service projects, and carry out inspections. Undertaking investigations; you’ll gather evidence including witness statements and expert opinions to create robust cases for formal enforcement. You’ll prepare reports to brief colleagues, senior officers (including legal services) and create legislative briefings. Liaising with key partners including regional Trading Standards services, HMRC, Police and other organisations, you’ll support the work of the service. In addition, you may be required to provide evidence in civil and criminal enforcement action in court as required.
What you’ll need
You’ll have some previous experience in Trading Standards or similar regulatory environment and/or formal qualification in trading standards such as DTS, DCA, DCATS. With good attention to detail, you’ll be capable of analysing problems in a structured manner, using evidence and your knowledge to determine the best course of action to achieve compliance. Using excellent communication skills, you’ll provide clear and constructive feedback, influence, and persuade behaviour changes and deal effectively with witnesses.
