Play a key role in providing critical services to support the efficient operation of the Council’s decision-making processes and the role of Councillors.
The Democratic Support Team aim to promote an effective and progressive service making the best use of innovative technology.
Join our team of 10 officers, to support key democratic decision making and involvement processes, such as support to Executive Boards, Health partnership arrangements, regulatory functions, and scrutiny work. This is a great opportunity to enhance your knowledge of the Council and political process and gain receive first-hand support and training on all aspects of our work.
Usually based at City Hall, the team are currently working from home. However, on occasion you may be required to attend meetings at City Hall.
This is a full-time, permanent post working 37 hours per week from Monday to Friday. You’ll be required to work flexible hours to take account of meetings you need to attend.
This is a career graded post (LG Band 04 – LG Band 05). There will be the opporunity for training and development to progress further in your role.
What you'll be doing
You’ll provide agenda management, detailed and accurate minute-taking service and associated committee support duties to the Council’s regulatory committees and scrutiny processes. This includes providing procedural advice to members, departments, and the public in respect of decision-making processes. You’ll manage and facilitate public access to meetings, including processes for the submission and consideration of questions, petitions, representations, and statements of case. Liaising with Directors, Heads of Service, other officers, and external parties, you’ll ensure there is clear communication in preparation for meetings.
What you’ll need
You’ll have experience within democratic services and servicing of meetings, preferably working in the public sector or other similar environments. With good understanding of relevant legislation and knowledge of council constitutions and other relevant local government policies, procedures, and protocols, you’ll have good knowledge of IT to support decision-making processes. You’ll have proficient IT skills, to be able to provide practical and technical support for virtual meetings, live streaming, and webcasting. Using excellent interpersonal skills, you’ll build and maintain strong working relationships with Councillors, officers at all levels, external organisations, and members of the public. Due to the nature of the role, you’ll have a high level of political awareness and sensitivity as well as demonstrate tact and impartiality.
