Full-time / 37 hours per week / Permanent
Play a key role in developing and delivering safe and sustainable transport in Leicester.
The third Local Transport Plan (LTP3) was adopted in 2011 which sets out our plans for traffic and transport during the period from 2011 to 2026. We want to transform Leicester into Britain's sustainable city that will be a great and prosperous place to live but also somewhere that does not place a burden on the planet in future years.
Our core transport objectives are to reduce congestion and improve journey times. This means better connectivity and access, reduced noise pollution, and improvement in air quality. We provide a transport system that facilitates a safer and healthier way of life and encourage more people to walk, cycle and use public transport - thus reducing carbon emissions. By maintaining our transport assets, we can improve quality of life, particularly for deprived groups. Working within the Transport Strategy Group, you’ll be involved in a wide range of transportation activities including projects to improve and promote safe travel on our streets.
This is full-time, permanent position working 37 hours per week from Monday to Friday. You’ll work from City Hall with the flexibility to work from home. However, you’ll be required to work outside of general working hours and travel within and outside of Leicester as necessary.
This is a career graded post (LG Band 07 – LG Band 09). Appointment to a level will depend on the outcome of the selection process and experience of the successful candidate.
What you’ll be doing
You’ll manage your own portfolio of work to meet and achieve delivery targets and outcomes. Working independently and as part of a team you’ll contribute our transport plan with a focus on reducing road related casualties. This includes managing both planned work on highways projects and reactive work to community concerns and mentoring junior team members. Maintaining close contact with public, elected members, colleagues, consultants, and the emergency services, you’ll prepare and present reports to senior management on transport policy, projects, and safe streets. You’ll attend project and public meetings so will be able to communicate with a wide and varied audience
What you’ll need
You’ll have considerable experience of designing, managing, and commissioning small to medium scale highways projects with experience of highway legislation and road safety interventions. You’ll be able to produce concept designs and commission highway safety schemes, write reports, use statutory procedures, and collate and understand/interpret accident statistics. Working under minimal supervision to deliver against challenging targets, you’ll have significant experience of partnership working. With a can-do attitude, a problem solver and strong communication skills, you’ll be able to implement creative solutions.
What we can offer you
As well as the satisfaction of helping to improve thousands of lives across Leicester, you can look forward to a work environment that encourages a healthy work/life balance. You’ll enjoy generous annual leave, membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme and the option of flexible working. We’ll also give you the chance to develop your skills and expertise with a variety of training and development opportunities. In addition, you can choose from a number of flexible benefits, including childcare vouchers, discounts on city buses and trains and help with relocation to Leicester, where appropriate.
