Opportunity to become a co-opted independent member of the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland police and crime panel.
Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Police and Crime Panel is looking for two committed and energetic people who either live or work within the Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland Force area to serve as co-opted independent members from January 2022 for a four year term.
This is an exciting opportunity to be involved with governance and accountability arrangements for policing in Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland.
The elected Police and Crime Commissioner for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland is required to consult with the Panel on their plans for policing, as well as the level of council tax precept and, when necessary the appointment of a Chief Constable. The Panel also maintain a regular check and balance on the performance of the Commissioner. In delivering their statutory responsibilities the Panel also undertake a programme of proactive scrutiny, making recommendations to the Commissioner on varied topics.
The role of a panel member is therefore an important and demanding one. Members are expected to uphold high standards of personal integrity at all times and to be respectful to others. The commitment required from a co-opted independent panel member will depend upon the work programme approved by the panel but typically, might average one day a month, including preparation time. The Panel meets on average 8 times a year for its formal meetings, but there may also be the opportunity to take part in pre-meetings, working parties, evidence gathering or scrutiny task groups.
Meetings are generally held in the afternoon but there may be a requirement to attend meetings at other times during the day and in the evening and to be available for telephone or email consultation, sometimes at short notice. Locations of meetings are generally at City Hall, Leicester or County Hall, Glenfield but can vary throughout the policing area.
The panel wishes to reflect the breadth of communities in the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland area and welcomes applications from all eligible people.

Qualities such as; a team ethic, self-confidence, enthusiasm and drive, respect for others, integrity and decisiveness.
Applications from people with experience (in a paid or unpaid role) in community safety, victim support, criminal justice will be particularly welcomed.
The appointment will be for a fixed term of 4 years. The role is not salaried, but an allowance of £831 per annum will be payable and other reasonable travel/subsistence costs will also be payable. New panel members will receive an induction and other appropriate training.
(Please note, the following may not serve as co-opted independent members: The Police and Crime Commissioner, a member of the Police and Crime Commissioner’s staff, a civilian member of Leicestershire Police Force, an MP or a member of any of the local authorities covered by the Force area. Serving police officers will not be eligible to serve in accordance with their conditions of service.)
